For those of you who for any reason have to move your wedding dress from one point to the other, it is important to take the necessary steps to ensure that your gown is well secured to prevent possible damage while on transit. At Abigail Bridal, we like to engage our clients and ensure that we equip them with the best tips as far as wedding dresses are concerned. Whether you have just bought your wedding dress from overseas or you are simply transporting your dress to your wedding venue, you need to observe these tips to avoid damaging your priced possession.
Travelling by plane
Before buying any specialty bags, it is important to contact your airline to find out their policy on carrying wedding dresses on board. It is understandable to be skeptical with the idea of putting your wedding dress in checked luggage because you never know how the packing is done in the luggage compartment. We always recommend taking your dress into the cabin if you can.
Some airlines actually have suit closets on board for you to hang your dress. If that’s not the case you might have to courteously request a hostess to secure you a free seat next to you if there is one. Bottom line is before you get to the airport make an inquiry ahead of time to avoid confusion.
Travelling by car
If you are travelling by car, ensure that you store your dress in a box or a waterproof bag and lay it on a flat surface preferable the back seat of the car. Do not place anything else on top of it and be careful when taking it out of the car.
Shipping your wedding dress
This option is not often the best way to get your dress wherever you want it to be. However, we understand that this might be the only avenue to get your wedding gown to where you are especially if you bought it online.
We always recommend using the services of trusted courier services that specialize in shipping sensitive items and offer insurance in case something happens to your dress while on transit. This option is often pricey but well worth it.
Preparing your dress on arrival
After getting to your destination, you definitely want to ensure that your dress is in tip-top shape for you to wear. You can check into a professional dry cleaning service to have it steam ironed to get rid of creases. If you are in a remote area then you will have to engage plan B, hang your wedding dress high and away from the walls if possible.
Take the dress out the bag and bring it into the bathroom to hang securely away from water pools and safe from falling to the floor. Run a very hot shower and close the doors and windows and door. Leave it there for 15-20 minutes to allow steam to ease out the creases in the fabric. Remove the dress from the bathroom and hang it back in your room. Alternatively, bring a handheld steam blower to straighten out your dress.
