Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. We hope you’re ready for one of the many lessons you’ve got to learn as you prepare for the big day. At Abigail Bridal Boutique, we are approached by many brides who simply don’t know a thing about wedding gowns. So we figured it’s important to talk about one of the most important elements you must consider when choosing a gown- the silhouette.
What is a wedding gown silhouette?
When you are talking about the silhouette in fashion, it refers to the outline of a dress or its overall shape. This shape is designed in order to flatter different figures that is why it may place a lot of emphasis/ accentuate certain areas like the waistline. Understanding the different silhouettes can help you choose the perfect wedding dress.
6 types of wedding dress silhouettes
This is one of the most common outlines whereby the skirt resembles the shape of the letter A. It is designed to hug the waist and cover the hips with the skirt flowing out to the ground. A-lines are usually ideal for all body types.
This is popularly known as the ‘fairy tale’ or ‘Cinderella’ gown. This dress comprises of a fitted bodice with a dramatic full skirt that covers the hips and thighs. It looks good on most body types especially on pear shaped figures since it covers the lower body. It tends to look overwhelming on a bride with a petite or small frame.
A trumpet gown will have a skirt that flair mid-thigh and it is usually ideal for a bride with a small waist and petite figure. Trumpet silhouette tends to place a lot of emphasis on the stomach and hip area so it’s not a suitable silhouette for a pear or apple shaped body.
If you have an hour glass shape this is the gown you should be going for. It basically hugs the body from the chest to the knees but flairs when it reaches close to the knee. Because it tends to accentuate every part of your body, stay away from it if you don’t want to place focus on certain areas like your waist.
Sheath dresses flow straight down from the neckline to the hem. They are suitable for petites and lean frames. They are basically ideal if you want to show off your curves.
A tea length silhouette looks good on all body shapes. It has a skirt that flairs from the waist and reaches somewhere between the ankle and knee.
