Kids make the cutest wedding guests, looking all great in their flowery dresses and epic suits. However, some brides and grooms to be prefer not to have kids at their wedding. This is a difficult piece of news to break to your family and friends, most who are married with kids.
How do you tell your little niece cannot be the flower girl and how will your sister, the mother, take it? Your fiancés younger cousin will make a very nice rings bearer, everyone says. Do you have to oblige while in your fairytale wedding plan there were no kids?
Some couples argue that photos look better when the entourage is adult only. It also reduces the hustle of taking care of the kids, keeping an eye at them all the time, we all know what monsters they can be.
How to break the news
Blame the budget and venue
Kids are expensive to cater for. Paying Ksh.1000 per plate for a kid and they will smear it all on their faces is painful. If your venue is small and contained there will not be enough space for parents and kids to wander off and they can get fussy.
Enlist the sympathetic aunt
Have a family member who understands the situation to speak to those who feel wronged. Coming from someone else, the kids out idea will look practical not just some bridezilla who does not like mess.
Late evening wedding
Another way of keeping off kids without saying it out loud is by having a late evening wedding. No parent will drag their kid to an evening event; you have a win-win situation here.
Invite only, don’t write kids names
If it is a cards only wedding, don’t write the names of the kids on the invitation cards. Parents should read between the lines on this.
How to handle kids
What if you cannot bring yourself to break hearts on the kids issue? Here is what to do when you have kids at the wedding;
Create a kid’s corner at the reception
Have a kids’ corner with kids furniture and dishes. This way you don’t have to worry how many expensive glasses will break. You could also have ordered separate catering for the kids, so the plate doesn’t have to be as expensive as for the adults.
Have a sitter
Have someone watch the kids as the party continues. Your maid of honour’s kid could be there, make sure she does not have to choose whether to watch you or her kid.
