Gift lists is whereby the wedding couple makes a list of gifts that they would prefer to have their guests bring on their wedding day, it is a wedding registry.
In many Kenyan weddings, guests are free to bring to a what they feel is an appropriate gift for a wedding. Couples are helped to start homes with the gifts brought during weddings. The resulted to gifts comprising mostly of kitchen ware.
When a bride brings up the idea of the gift lists, parents and the older generation think it is rude. Our mamas taught us that when someone hands you a present, smile and say thank you.
Why should we have 15 sets of drinking glasses as wedding gifts? People have adapted to the gift listing culture, it lets the couples list what they do not have and would appreciate to have them as gifts.
What to list on the gift registry
Ensure that what you have listed is a wide range of items. The range costs should also be as large. This will help the guest select in a range that they will comfortably afford.
Select 2-3 stores that offer the products. This will give the guests a range of selection in terms of locations and pricing. Make sure that these shops stock these products and confirm with them that the products will not run out of stock soon.
Get in touch with the stores before printing out the wedding cards. Indicate these shops at the bottom of the wedding invitation cards. Send the cards about 3 weeks to the wedding after confirming with the stores. This is to ensure that the selected gifts will not be sold out before the wedding.
The best way to inform your invitees about the gift list is to put a note at the bottom of the card stating at which shops the gift registry will be.
